Hi , I had a Masectomy back in January after being diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer .
Chemo is due to start on the 17th of this month .I am so scared ,scared of having a PICC line , scared of how ill I am going to be .Friends and family keep telling me to “stay strong “ and I really don’t feel strong inside but am trying to not show how afraid I am to them .

Is it “normal” to be this scared ?

I really am going into Chemo expecting the absolute worse and hoping for the best !

  • Hey! Yes, all those feelings are natural. It's so hard when people tell you to be strong but you don't feel that way.

Ive had chemo twice now and both times were different and I'm happy to say, neither were as bad as I expected!

With that I've had 2 PICC lines and, again, they weren't that bad either. I actually missed my last one when it was taken out!!

I think expecting the worst is a good move, then you can't be disappointed but I'm sure you will be just fine.

I have a vlog on Youtube 'My Uncurable Cancer Diary' and there are loads of other vlogs out there too that can help put your mind at rest.

    Loads of love ♡

  • Thank you so much for replying - it’s nice to hear from someone who has actually been through it .
I will check out your blog on YouTube.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

Of course it's natural to feel scared about something you've never had any experience with before. I was diagnosed with breast cancer last April and had a lumpectomy followed by chemotherapy and then radiotherapy. I didn't have a PICC line as I wanted to try with a cannula first. Bearing in mind that I didn't find the thought of having the cannula inserted at all appealing, I found it a pretty easy thing to happen.

Chemotherapy might not make you feel ill at all and, even if you do have side effects, the chemo nurses are good at giving you things to relieve them. I count myself very lucky in that with the EC I had every 3 weeks for 3 cycles, I felt under the weather (a bit like I was coming down with a cold) for the first 10 days or so and then felt perfectly fine for the remaining 10 days. I did lose my hair though, but it's grown back now.

After EC I had weekly paclitaxel for 12 weeks and didn't get any side effects whatsoever with that.

I can see that you've already joined the breast cancer group which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support from others.

When you feel ready to post there you can start a new post in the same way as you did here, and also join in with existing conversations by clicking on reply.

It would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
