Just been diagnosed with breast cancer

New to this community. I need a mastectomy. I am slim and don’t have fat on my tummy for reconstruction with skin tissue. They say they can do an inner thigh (both sides) reconstruction connecting with my chess blood vessels and reducing my (hood) breast down 3 cups. This is a long operation and I’m very worried. Is an implant a better option for me ? What are your experiences?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that you've recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and it's natural to wonder what the best option for you might be.

I can see that you've already joined and posted in the breast cancer group, which I'm sure you'll find is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support.

It would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Gosh just read your profile Latchbrook. You poor darling - you’ve been through so much my heart goes out to you. Thanks for pointing out about my profile. I’m new to this and eventually found the breast cancer chat. First diagnosis is all so overwhelming and I’m still working long hours as I wait for the operation date. Big hugs to you. I hope you are ok with the radiography. Big hug again.

  • Hi

You are right that when you are first told that you have cancer it does all seem to be overwhelming. However, I've found that by just concentrating on one thing at a time it becomes less daunting. So when I was waiting for/having the lumpectomy that's all I concentrated on and I didn't think about chemotherapy or radiotherapy until that was the next treatment.

I finished radiotherapy in the middle of January and found that the easiest of the 3 treatments with the only side effect being an itchy rash which developed halfway through. A course of hydrocortisone and antihistamines got rid of that quickly though.

Wishing you all the best with your mastectomy.
