Hi, my partner was diagnosed with tongue cancer 6 months ago & he finished his treatment at Christmas, he's had a scan to find out how the treatment's gone but we don't get the results untill the end of march. I just feel like he's giving up, he doesn't get out of bed unless he's going to the toilet & he very rarely leaves the flat. I am disabled myself & need looking after.

  • Hi, This community is divided into groups. there is a Head and Neck Cancer secton HERE Just click on the red link

That's where I hang out being a tongue cancer survivor myself....four years now. There are plenty of folk there to give you a hand.

What your husband feels is very common after such a brutal treatment and is likely a form of PTSD. There is help. Pop over to our group and say hello

  • Hello again. It's good that you have joined the Head and Neck Group. You've not posted there yet and I can see that it took a lot of courage to post here so you might not be ready to join in there. In case you are still here,   I have a few suggestions

You can always talk to somebody by ringing the Macmillan helpline at the bottom of my post.

Macmillan offer six free counselling sessions which you could think about. Have a look HERE

Do have a word with your GP. Many of my fellow members have got through this period of depression with a short course of antidepressants or maybe even mild sleeping pills. It's important to look after yourself too.

There is a charity called The Swallows run by throat cancer survivor Chris Curtis and his wife Sharon https://theswallows.org.uk/ Their helpline is available 24/7 and is answered by a person, not a machine. They have a particularly good carers' section.

There is a way out of this for your husband.

    Take care

  • That’s sad. It seems such a long time when you’re waiting doesn’t it?  Can you chat to him about any interests he had before cancer? Try to rekindle a spark of interest again? I expect you already do this but I was going to say chat about happy times youve had in the past, perhaps with some photos of holidays, pets, family, whatever.  I’m sorry to hear of your disablement too and hope you have some help with chores, shopping etc or  have a cup of tea and chat. Best wishes to you both x
