Asking how long?

Hi all,

I’m very new to this group. My mum has been living with secondary breast cancer that is now in the very stages and how spread to many areas on her back and spine.

She has been in respite care at a hospice for the past couple of weeks trying to get the pain under control because she was struggling at home. There is a weekly review from the consultant doctor. She has had a MRI scan to assess the changes and this resulted in a significant spread of the cancer in her back. However my mum was brave enough to ask the uncomfortable question of how long does she has left. However the doctor just didn’t give any indication and that they would catch up month by month to assess her. However I would like to understand if this is the normal answer. I was expecting a range of time based on their experience. Granted I know this is not an exact science but I though they would be honest. But I’d like to know if this is normal and they don’t answer these questions?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your mum has secondary breast cancer and it's natural to want to know how long she might have left.

The online community is divided up into different support groups so I'm going to suggest that you join and post your question in the supporting someone with incurable cancer group as I'm sure some of the members there will be able to help you.

To join just click on the link I've created which will take you there. One you've joined, you can then start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
