Hi

I can’t believe I am writing this but yesterday I received the news that I have gastric cancer. I’m 38 years old. I have been having various tests since October and after a laparoscopy early November the doctors said there was a chance that it was cancer but that there were no signs of spread so they would be able to remove after having chemo to shrink it. I have had several biopsies since which have been coming back as negative and on 6th Jan I went in for surgery for a partial gastrectomy and that’s when they found that the cancer has likely spread outside of my stomach. The doctors aren’t 100% until I have a PET scan and am waiting to see an oncologist to plan my treatment. I’m just completely numb at the moment. I’m more worried about how my family will cope. I currently feel well in myself so holding on to any positive that I can and also happy to chat and share my experiences with anyone who needs it.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that you have recently been diagnosed with stomach cancer and I know what a difficult time this will be for you.

As the online community is divided up into different support groups, I'm going to recommend that you join and post in the stomach cancer group, which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and receive support from others with a similar diagnosis

To join, just click on the link I've created which will take you to the group. You can then start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'. To save you typing all this out again I'm sure you'll be aware that you can simply copy and paste it into your new post.

It would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
