Hi,

Thanks to everyone on this site who has been so welcoming, I've just come across this page after joining the uterine cancer page and thought I'd post here as I still don't know if I've even got cancer or are just panicking unnecessarily.

A bit of history, June last year I had my period, but bled for 2 weeks which was very unusual for me as I'd always been regular as clockwork. Stopped bleeding for 2 weeks, then bled for 5 weeks. Thought I was maybe perimenopausal as I was 40, but went to GP (in Portugal where I live). She sent me for bloods (which were normal apart from low d3) and transvaginal ultrasound which showed cysts on both ovaries, 3.8cm on my left and 6.7cm on my right, and an area of endometrial thickening of 17mm. During this time I was bleeding almost continuously, some days heave with large clots, some days light spotting. GP referred me urgently to the Gynaecologist but been waiting 2 months and now got my appointment through for end of February. Bleeding has now returned to justy usual period, but now have right pelvic pain, so really concerned something sinister is going on. I know it's unlikely to be cancer, but I'm 40, and my mum was diagnosed with cancer at 45 (breast) and died at 53, and my dad died at 50, so I've always subconsciously worried about hitting my 40's and becoming unwell.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about the time you are having.

This is such a stressful and challenging time but you have done the right thing in reaching out to a place where you can ask questions and getting support from others who are on the ‘exact’ same cancer journey.

The Community is divided into support groups (discussion rooms) and I see that you have already joined and posted in our supportive Womb (uterus) cancer support group. This group is a safe place to talk to others who have the same experience to ask questions and get support.

Obviously Macmillan is a UK based Charity but you can call our helpline from outside of the UK on +44 207 091 2230 but the team will not be able to advise on healthcare systems overseas.

We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

Do get back to me if you need further help.

  • Thanks for your reply Mike, and so glad to see you're in remission. This group has been a great support so far. Thanks for giving me the international phone number for Macmillan, I must admit it's a strange feeling getting used to a whole new healthcare system in Portugal as I spent 20 years working as a nurse in the NHS before we moved to Portugal, so feel I know it inside out

  • It took a few years to actually get into a remission that has lasted any period of time.

It’s amazing that the Macmillan Community supports people from all over the world. The community is rather unique as many say that there is nothing in their countries that is the same.

All the very best in navigating the Portuguese system, but do remember you will get some great support back here in the good old UK through our Community Support Groups ((hugs))
