Hi I’ve recently been diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer after having a hemithyroidectomy, I’ve been told I’ll be having a scan in 6 months now rather than having completion surgery to remove my remaining thyroid , I’m worrying about not having surgery to remove it and it being left as my nodule was 15mm in size and it’s making me worry that I’m just being left now for 6 months what can I do ?
also is this normal practice as when I originally went for my hemithyroidectomy they explained should it come back I do have papilla thyroid cancer I’d be back in 12 weeks to have the remaining thyroid removed and now it changed , I guess I just feel scared and confused and feel like I just want it removed so I’m not at risk I suppose , I have 3 girls under 8 and my kind is just running away with it self , especially as this has come as a complete shock as it was and accidental find when I went for a ultrasound for a lump on the right side of my neck on a lymph node which I’m no better clued up on what that actually is as they wanted to deal with this first , when I had my ultrasound they also noted I had mottled salivary glands and thought I had the auto immune disease sjrogens I think that’s how it’s spelt , but bloods said I didn’t but still don’t know why I have mottled glands or if it’s even anything of concern , I guess I’m just a little clueless about it all and feel out of control from what is happening with me going forward , can anyone help?
Hi CAS92 and a warm welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your diagnoses.
A cancer journey is such a stressful and challenging time but you have done the right thing in reaching out to a place where you can ask questions and getting support from others who are on the ‘exact’ same cancer journey.
The Community is divided into support groups (discussion rooms) and I can see you have already joined our supportive Thyroid cancer support group. This group is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.
If you'd like to connect in with a group click on the (Bold) Group Link I have created above then once the group page opens you can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘new post’ by clicking in the box near the top right with + New or + (Depending on the device you are using) and you are ready to go. You could copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.
The Macmillan Support Line is open from 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 where you can talk with someone about specific cancer and practical information, get emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just connect with a listening ear.
We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.
We also have our Telephone Buddy Service where you can be matched with someone who understands what you're going through, and they'll give you a weekly call.
Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and aim to give support to all the family.
Do get back to me if you need further help.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
