Setting up a blog

Hi I’m newly diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I’d like some advice/help to set up a blog to keep friends and family informed of my treatment. I know about the blogs on this site which are really useful but this would be a private one, password protected. I’ve heard that WordPress and Wix are easy sites to use. Has anyone got any experience of using them or found any good tutorials that could walk me through the set up?

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your diagnoses.

I never did any blogs over my 23 years journey with my incurable blood cancer but let’s see if anyone picks up on your question.

Getting support from others who are on the ‘exact’ same cancer journey is very important. The Community is divided into support groups (discussion rooms) so can I recommend you join and post in our supportive Ovarian cancer support group. This is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

If you'd like to connect in with a group click on the (Bold) Group Link I have created above. Once the group page opens click on the black banner that says [click to join] at the bottom, or the [Join] button under "Group tools."

You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘new post’ by clicking in the box near the top right with + New or + (Depending on the device you are using) and you are ready to go. You could copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

The Macmillan Support Line is open from 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 where you can talk with someone about specific cancer and practical information, get emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just connect with a listening ear.

We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

We also have our Telephone Buddy Service where you can be matched with someone who understands what you're going through, and they'll give you a weekly call.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and aim to give support to all the family.

Do get back to me if you need further help.

  • Hi The Highlander. Thanks very much for your help. I’ll join up to the Ovarian cancer group and see if there’s any blogging expertise there.

  • Hi Margs

I use Wordpress which is really easy to use. The site will walk you through setting it up and you can set your preferences to allow whoever you want in.

Have a look at mine linked at the bottom of my post

    Good luck

  • HI Margs

A warm welcome to the community.

I'm supporting my husband though his stage 4 brain tumour journey and as you may have seen, I have written a few of the community blogs shared on here.

In my real world I am an indie-author and blogger and use Wordpress. It's free and easy to use and can easily be shared via most social media platforms too. As Beesuit says, there are tutorials etc and that walks you through the initial set up. Give it a try and if you get stuck, PM me on here and I'll try to help where I can. If you use FB, you can also create a private group on there that only you and those you grant access to could see- that might be another option to consider.

Blogging/journaling is a great coping mechanism as well as a good way to keep everyone updated. Good luck with it.

Sending you healing love, light and hugs

  • Hi Dani. Thanks for the advice and good to be able to look at your blog. A neighbour has offered to come round and help me with it this weekend.

  • Hi Wee Me

Thanks so much for your helpful advice and offer of help.

I’m going to give it a shot this weekend.

  • Brilliant. Just go for it. Oh and the very best of luck. I have a friend diagnosed with stage 4 12 years ago. She’s still well despite a well managed recurrence. Hugs
