My son (53) has had successful treatment for oesophagus cancer, and was discharged into our care as he lives alone was  told he could start having drinks, yogurt, jelly etc but he starts to cough and brings up a sort of weak bile. When in hospital he was on a bile drain,

Chats with his MacMillian nurse and the hospital dietitian on the phone says he must start to increase his food intake along side his feeding system via his feeding tube, but he is worried the continued coughing could harm the operation site.. is this a normal situation?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

That's great to read that your son has had successful treatment for oesophagus cancer but it's natural to have worries afterwards.

As the online community is divided up into different support groups, I'm going to suggest that you join and post in the oesophageal cancer group which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support.

To do this just click on the link I've created which will take you to the group. You can then join and start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

Your son could also give his cancer nurse specialist (CNS), sometimes referred to as a keyworker, a call to discuss his worries regarding harming the operation site with his coughing.

It would be great if you could pop something about your son's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
