New to the group and struggling with chemo side effects.

Hi I’m new to these forums and not sure if there’s a more appropriate one for me. I was recently diagnosed with an additional rare leukaemia and am now in a clinical trial. Chemo has knocked me sideways. The biggest problem is having lost my sense of taste over CHRISTMAS for heaven’s sakes! The prospect of not eating anything pleasant while watching my hair fall out is filling me with anxiety and dread. I feel violated, can’t sleep, but trying to do everything I should to keep well during chemo . Basically - Help!!

  • Hi  and welcome to our community, though always a little bit sorry to meet a new friend here.

My experience with cancer is through my wife who has Leiomyosarcoma so rather different to you but she had two different types of chemotherapy. The first caused her to lose her hair but she choose to take control and had the rest shaved off. This round of chemo only went half-way because it caused other problems - but the doctors managed to fix them too - a bit of an adventure being passed from one specialist to another. The second type of chemo though knocked her cancer back a bit but also seems to have made her cancer stable and so now we are living with rather than dying from cancer.  Leiomyosarcoma is also "rare" - so helpful since it means little data but at least through the community I have found people we can share experience with.

I see you have found the Leukaemia forum and if you posted and introduced yourself on there more friends will join your circle - many who have been where you are now. Christmas does make things extra hard I am sure, not least that many of the support services are either closed of running an emergency only service, add to that watching everyone else going around with what seems not a worry in the world and feeling like the world moved on without us.

There is a considerable amount of "stuff" in Chemotherapy side effects that might be helpful to use as a kind of encyclopaedia,

    <<hugs>>

  • Thank you for your reply. I’ve read up on side effects mainly in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep. I just didn’t expect it to be so hard!!! Thank you I’ll look forward to finding those who I can relate to for my own leukaemia type and glad to hear you are living with not dying from.
