Breast cancer

I have been diagnosed with breast cancer on Thursday 8th Dec. This was diagnosed through ultrasound and mammogram. They can't tell me what type of cancer it is until I get biopsy results on 22nd Dec. They will then discuss treatment. I'm really scared and confused and surprised they are so certain it's cancer without biopsy confirmation. Has anyone else had a diagnosis just from the scans?

Hi - I did and it was scary but try to see it as reassuring that they know exactly what they are dealing with and will swing into action. Make sure you have someone with you when you get the biopsy results though.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your diagnoses.

A cancer journey is such a stressful and challenging time but you have done the right thing in reaching out to a place where you can ask questions and getting support from others who are on the ‘exact’ same cancer and journey.

The Community is divided into support groups (discussion rooms) so can I recommend you join and post in our supportive Breast cancer support group. This is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

If you'd like to connect in with a group click on the Green (Bold) Group Link I have created above. Once the group page opens click on the black banner that says [click to join] at the bottom, or the [Join] button under "Group tools."

You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘new post’ by clicking in the box near the top right with + New or + (Depending on the device you are using) and you are ready to go. You could copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

The Macmillan Support Line is open from 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 where you can talk with someone about specific cancer and practical information, get emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just connect with a listening ear.

We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

We also have our Telephone Buddy Service where you can be matched with someone who understands what you're going through, and they'll give you a weekly call.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and aim to give support to all the family.

Do get back to me if you need further help.

  • Thanks. I'm definitely taking someone with me. I  was just shocked they were that sure and finding it really hard to accept. I keep thinking they've got it wrong. I'm sure if there was any doubt they wouldn't have told me though. I'm dreading my results and struggling with my thoughts.

  • Hi I was in a similar position to you. Also diagnosed after routine mammogram. Confirmed in September and just underwent surgery on 8th December which involved removal of left breast and reconstruction. Discharged on the 11th December. To me everything seemed really quick which could be why I still feel like it was all a dream. Unable to sleep I’m glad for the forum it’s now 04,30am.

    wishing you all the best

    Dee

    • Hi Twiglet. I,v just been diagnosed with tnbc and had a ct scan today to see if it has spread , mri on the 21st. They told me before I had biopsy  results that it looked worrying and like a breast cancer, I imagine that they do this every day and know what they are looking at it's still a shock to hear. I hope that your biopsies come back clear as most do. I found that keeping as busy as I could helped take my mind off imagining the worst.  Good luck, fingers crossed. X
