New to group…anxious and frightened…

Hi there, I’m new  to forums having been diagnosed in July with stage 4 bowel cancer with liver mets, inoperable.  I’m moving on to the next stage of my treatment having had 4 and a bit (I got flu so had to stop) rounds of Capox therapy which has gone well so far.  About to move on to a new thereapy which I’m still processing but I know that it’s a very good regime and physically will make me feel back to where I was a few weeks ago.  I’m keen to be able to talk to others, should have before as I am now really struggling with my head.  I’ve been good up until now but had a full on panic attack yesterday and the pain from that far outweighs anything I’ve ever felt before - never felt so much pain in my head, heart.  I don’t know if this is where to take these thoughts and feelings, sorry if it isn’t.  I truly try to be positive, it’s honestly my second nature but for just now I need to hear and speak to people that are maybe having similar feelings?  Sorry if this isn’t the right place and if I’m bringing ‘down’ the mood - not my intention at all.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your diagnoses.

A cancer journey is such a stressful and challenging time but you have done the right thing in reaching out to a place where you can ask questions and getting support from others who are on the ‘exact’ same cancer and journey.

The Community is divided into support groups (discussion rooms) so can I recommend you join and post in our supportive Bowel (colon and rectum) cancer and Liver, secondary cancer support groups. These groups are safe places to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

If you'd like to connect in with a group click on the Green (Bold) Group Link I have created above. Once the group page opens click on the black banner that says [click to join] at the bottom, or the [Join] button under "Group tools."

You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘new post’ by clicking in the box near the top right with + New or + (Depending on the device you are using) and you are ready to go. You could copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

The Macmillan Support Line is open from 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 where you can talk with someone about specific cancer and practical information, get emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just connect with a listening ear.  We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

We also have our Telephone Buddy Service where you can be matched with someone who understands what you're going through, and they'll give you a weekly call.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and aim to give support to all the family.

Do get back to me if you need further help.

Hi Jonathan. This is my first post. I’m brand-new to this whole process, diagnosed in mid-November and start my first cycle of chemo (Folfoxiri) on Monday. I’ve got similar to you with colon cancer and apparently inoperable liver mets. I tell you, that’s a f%#king shit thing to be told when I’m 4 weeks away from my 40th birthday.

My wife keeps encouraging me to talk to people as she’s worried I’m regressing into myself. I’m not quite sure how to have conversations or even what to say. I’ve got three young kids (1,3,6) and to be told I won’t see next Christmas if the chemo doesn’t work is unbearable. I keep finding stories of people who were told they’re inoperable and have a ‘year or 2 to live’ a decade ago, but I’m sure they must be outliers - but at least they exist!

Be strong brother. I am trying to stay as positive as I can and I’m generally a ‘doer’, but sometimes I just don’t know what to say or do. You’re not alone. Good luck with your new therapy.

  • Hi  and an unfortunate welcome to the community.

You may also want to check out our Bowel (colon and rectum) cancer and Liver, secondary cancer support groups as there is nothing better than talking with others who understand and her this.

We also have our Living with incurable cancer - incurable patients only group. I have been on my incurable blood cancer journey for over 23 years and so far so good.

Always around to help you connect in.

  • Hi again   10 days ago I suggested that you join and put up a post in our Soft tissue sarcomas support group. This is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support so do post in this group.

I am not medically trained and as I have an incurable cancer I will eventually die with it but hopefully not because of it.
