My daughter whom has autism has recently been diagnosed with secondary cancer.

She relocated to Newcastle in April in a small 1 bedroom flat, and has friends she's made in the area socially. But her dad and myself are her main carers, as she has aspergers She doesn't receive the support that she needs as the government system is discrimatory.

We, Amy's dad and myself her mother live in Macclesfield, Cheshire, which is 3 hrs drive away.

There's been a lot of telephone conversations and appts relative to the recent diagnosis that we've had to support Amy with.  We know that we shall be travelling back and too to the area for quite a while. We've tried staying at my daughter's flat now for a week and there really is not enough room and it's adding to the stress and anxiety that were all feeling.  We have tried staying at a premier in and that's okay for a short while but for any longer it's no good, we need somewhere where we can cook, wash clothes etc

I'm really hoping that has suggestions that could help.

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

As the online community is divided up into different support groups, I'm going to recommend that you join and post in the carers only group, which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support. You may also find people there who can make some suggestions about possible accommodation.

My first thought about this is, have you spoken to anyone at the hospital about accommodation locally. I would imagine that people needing to stay close by will have come up before and they might be able to make recommendations.

To join just click on the link I've created which will take you directly there. You can then join and start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you have a minute, it would be great if you could pop something about your daughter's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
