Hi,
I'm new here.
What's a Maggie group, please? (Told you I was a newbie!!! )
My elderly father has parotid gland cancer, so looking for support/advice. I've joined the head and neck group and already found it helpful.
Hi and a warm welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your dad's diagnoses.
A cancer diagnosis in the family like this can be such a challenging and stressful time but I do hope you will find the Community a safe place to get support.
The following link will take you to the Maggie's Centre website. Maggie's is a Cancer Support Charity who have Support Centres spread around the country (normally near a cancer hospital) and they run various support groups as well as one on one support for both patients and family - do check the link.
Our local Maggie's Centre in Inverness is amazing so comes with my ***** recommendation. We have people who will do a 3-4 hr round trip just so they can attend the various groups...... but this is part of life living in the Highlands.
You can also check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area - just click on the link I created.
We also have our Telephone Buddy Service where your dad can be matched with someone who understands what he is going through, and they'll give him a weekly call.
The Community is divided into support groups (discussion rooms) so can I recommend you join and post in our general
Head and neck cancer (That I see you have joined)
support groups where you will connect with others navigating the same challenges supporting family. These groups are safe places to talk to others, to ask questions.
If you'd like to connect in with a group click on the Green (Bold) link I have created above. Once the group page opens click on the black banner that says [click to join] at the bottom, or the [Join] button under "Group tools."
You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘new post’ by clicking in the box near the top right with + New or + (Depending on the device you are using) and you are ready to go. You could copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.
Macmillan have many support services so do check out the Macmillan Support Line is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00. These services provide cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear. We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.
Please do get back to me if you need further help.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
