Hi all. Would anyone know how dangerous it is if you live with someone having chemotherapy?
Hi and welcome to the community.
My CNS told us a few things about what to look out for once I was home following chemo.
Chemo drugs can remain in a patient's bodily fluids for about 48 - 72 hours after therapy ends. This means the drugs could be present in vomit, urine and excrement during that time so patients and caregivers should take some precautions like earring gloves to clear up any spills or when cleaning.
If possible, patients should use a separate toilet from others in the home.
Always wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet.
Avoid sex for about 48 - 72 hours after therapy ends or until white blood cell counts rise to safe levels.
If your chemotherapy causes a low platelet count, intercourse could cause bleeding. If your platelet count is extremely low, severe bleeding could occur.
All the best.
