Hi all my wife has cancer and she has just finished her cemo for now as she is hoping for an operation in a couple of months.  My question is as she is still so very weak , does anybody know where we can get a wheelchair from because we were told she must start to get fit for the operation so we went to the zoo today and she collapsed, luckily we were given a wheelchair to use for the day which was a great help.Any help with information would be great

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community although I am sorry to hear about your wife’s diagnosis and ongoing challenges.

I was very in a wheelchair for a few months and this was arranged by my hospital clinical team, you could also talk with her GP.

A cancer diagnosis in the family can be such a stressful and challenging time but I do hope you will find the community a safe place to get support and ask your questions.

The Community is divided into support groups (discussion rooms) so can I suggest you consider joining our supportive Family and friends and Carers only groups where you will connect with others navigating the same challenges.

If you'd like to connect in with a group click on the Green (Bold) link(s) I have created above. Once the group page opens click on the black banner that says [click to join] at the bottom, or the [Join] button under "Group tools."

You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘new post’ by clicking in the box near the top right with + New or + (Depending on the device you are using) and you are ready to go.

Macmillan have many support services so do check out the Macmillan Support Line is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00. These services provide cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear.

We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and aim to give support to all the family.

Please do get back to me if you need further help.

    All the very best.

Many Thanks for this The highlander. Since joining the forum and the cancer support team I just can't believe  how kind and helpful people can be. With myself my wife is going through a hard time and the forum gives me a chance to take time out for a couple of minutes just to talk to people who are going through the same situation, It really helps. Once again to everybody Many Thanks

  • Good to hear you are finding the Community a good place to connect in with people who understand and to gather information.

I see you have joined our Family and friends group. It would be worth putting up a post and introducing yourself to the group.

Always around to chat on this thread as well.

Hi everybody Harvey here I am new to you all. I am 60 and my wife is 69 and sadly she has cancer of the Oesophagus ( to save you looking it up its in the throat) because it was a new word on me.  My wife started treatment about three months now, she is currently waiting for a major operation. Hopefully this will be in about two to three months but as you all know it depends on how fit she will be. We have to go to the hospital next week where she has to go on a keep fit bike and other equipment just to see if she will be up to it  so fingers crossed. I really hope everybody is doing OK and as I have recently  learned  DONT GIVE UP

  • Hi again ……. we’re you intending to put this post up in the Family and friends group?

If so, you need to copy the text on your post then click on the link above and once the group opens you can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘new post’ by clicking in the box near the top right with + New or + (Depending on the device you are using) and you are ready to go.
