Hi my dad has been diagnosed with lung cancer, he doesn't have many options for treatment etc I will try and give abit of background without confusing anyone. Last year my dad fell off a ladder he fracRolling eyestured many bones and was really poorly as you can imagine, whilst he was in hospital they found a shadow on his lungs which turned out to be cancer, he was offered surgery which he took they operate on him the only downside was he broke 9 ribs 7 one side and 2 the other and the cancer was in the better side, they managed to get as much out as they could and he went on to have chemo, unfortunatley this gave him kidney failure so he had to stop treatment after he recovered they offered him a lower dose and he ended up getting sepsis. The nodule has obviously now grown in size and he has been given between 4months and 36months to live, although chemo is an option just a different type which he is going to try. My question is if any body has the answer can he be medically retired through macmillan (he works full time) as he has terminal cancer or is that not a thing anymore? I am going to ring them in the morning and ask but wondered if anybody knew the answer on here or not. ThanksRolling eyes

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community although I am sorry to hear about your dad’s diagnosis.

A cancer diagnosis in the family can be such a stressful and challenging time but I do hope you will find the community a safe place to get support and ask your questions.

The Community is divided into support groups (discussion rooms) and when it comes to the practical and emotional challenges of supporting someone you may also benefit from joining our Lung Cancer group and our general Family and friends and Supporting someone with incurable cancer groups where you will connect with others navigating the same challenges.

If you'd like to connect in with a group click on the Green (Bold) link(s) I have created above. Once the group page opens click on the black banner that says [click to join] at the bottom, or the [Join] button under "Group tools."

You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘new post’ by clicking in the box near the top right with + New or + (Depending on the device you are using) and you are ready to go. You could copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

As fir your question about your dad and medical retirement do try calling the Macmillan Support Line is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00. These services provide cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Or you could post your question in our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing supporting all the family.

Please do get back to me if you need further help.

    All the very best.
