Possible stomach cancer

Hi there,

I don’t even know where to start. From the beginning I suppose…

my mam is 67 and was having trouble eating, she’s loosing weight rapidly and feels like there’s something stuck in her throat. After 5 weeks of attempting to make a doctors appointment she finally saw the gp who told her he’s pretty confident that she has stomach cancer. He said there’s a slim possibility that it’s reflux.

my grandma died of stomach cancer 18 year’s ago so given this the gp  is pretty certain. We watched as my grandma slowly slipped away and me and my mam were her carers until the end. She’s scheduled for an Endoscopy on Wednesday and has bloods taken today.

I know in my heart that it is the dreaded C and I’m really struggling trying to get my head around it. I haven’t told my children yet but they keep asking me if I’m alright. They can sense something is wrong.

I have a lot of illnesses myself and my mental health is already ruined. I don’t think I can cope with it all. My mam was amazing with my gran, she fed her, bathed her, everything. I honestly don’t think I am strong enough to do what she did..

im only 35 and I’m too young to lose my mam. She does so much to our family. I’m just in bits..

sorry for rambling but I don’t know where else to turn x

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community although I am sorry to hear about your mum’s ongoing diagnosis. A possible cancer diagnosis in the family can be such a stressful and challenging time but I do hope you will find the community a safe place to get support and ask your questions.

The Community has various support groups (discussion rooms) so can I suggest you consider joining our supportive Stomach cancer group. This is a safe place to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

When it comes to the practical and emotional challenges of supporting someone you may also benefit from joining our general Family and friends group where you will connect with others in the same position.

If you'd like to connect in with a group click on the Green (Bold) link I have created above. Then once the group page opens click on the black banner that says [click to join] at the bottom, or the [Join] button under "Group tools."

You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘new post’ by clicking in the box near the top right with + New or + (Depending on the device you are using) and you are ready to go. You could copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

Macmillan have many support services so do check out the Macmillan Support Line is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00. These services provide cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear. We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.

Give me a shout if you need further help.

    Best regards.

  • Hi, I’m also 35 and going through something similar with my mum. For the past couple of weeks my mum has been feeling sick and had diharea along with loss of appetite and bad acid reflux. She went to the dr this morning and has an appointment next week with a gastroenterologist under the 2 week wait. He obviously thinks it’s something sinister and I have this terrible feeling that it is too and I’m just devastated, I can’t concentrate on anything and I feel totally lost. I hope your mum is doing ok, what was the outcome of her tests?
