Hi at 64 I’ve just been diagnosed with early stages of prostrate cancer on the 1st June 2022 and been offered surgery to remove the prostrate, how long were people in hospital and what was the recover period like. I live at home with my wife and I’m just wondering what help she will need to help me in my recovery.

  • Hi  and a welcome to the Online Community although I am so sorry to see you joining us and to hear about your diagnoses. A cancer diagnosis can be such a stressful and challenging time but when it comes to support there is nothing better than talking with others who are in the same position.

The Community has various support groups (discussion rooms) and I do see that you have joined our Prostate cancer group. This is a safe place to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

If you'd like to connect in with a group click on the Green (Bold) link I have created above. Then once the group page opens you can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘new post’ by clicking in the box near the top right with + New or + (Depending on the device you are using) and you are ready to go. You could copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

Macmillan have many support platforms so do check out the Macmillan Support Line is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 or via Webchat and Email too. These services provide cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear. We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

To find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers check our Online Information and Support Section

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.

Give me a shout if you need further help.

    Best regards.

I am possative about the whole process I am gonna be going through my farther died at my age with the same prostrate cancer so I do have a bit of insight but pleased to say things have changed a lot now.
  • Each journey has its twists and turns and we all navigate it as best as we can. Sorry to hear about your father but one thing I have learned form my 23+ years is treatment and outcomes have improved immeasurably over the years.

  • Unfortunately like yourself I have had numerous illnesses since 1990 which nearly cost me my life and like yourself you learn as you say to navigate I believe in your own way and learn to stay posative and you teach yourself to overcome things and adjust your ways to suit your lifestyle. I have found in life that if I stay posative and laugh in the face of these illnesses I come out on top.
