Husband has Lung Cancer

Hi, My husband had a stroke 15 months ago which left him with less mobility but able to get around the house and upstairs etc. In March this year things started to go downhill and he was sent for a chest xray and CT scan which have shown a mass in his right lung. He is currently in hospital after having pneumonia and his mobility has reduced dramatically and has lost a stone in 2 weeks he has also become doubly incontinent which wasn't there before he went in to hospital. the doctors have told me it is lung cancer and there will be no treatment and they have also told him but due to the stroke he doesn't seem to be registering this news and just says he wants to come home. My  issue is that although i want him home I work full time and if he is unable to walk about and get to the bathroom etc how can I manage this? Really would appreciate some guidance. at the minute I am waiting on the review from the hospital regarding his discharge and I am looking at a rehab unit as an option but am I kidding myself that he will be able to regain any mobility?

  • Hi  and welcome to the Macmillan Online Community although I am so sorry to hear about your husbands diagnosis.

A cancer diagnosis like this in the family can be such a stressful and challenging time but I do hope you will find the community a safe place to get support and ask your questions.

You have seen that the Community has various support groups (discussion rooms) so can I recommend that you consider posting in our Carers only and Supporting someone with incurable cancer groups where you will connect with others in the same position. These are safe places to talk to others who aresupporting family and friends on their support pathway.

If you'd like to connect in with a group click on the Green (Bold) link I have created above. Then once the group page opens you can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘new post’ by clicking in the box near the top right with + New or + (Depending on the device you are using) and you are ready to go. You could copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

Macmillan have many support platforms so do check out the Macmillan Support Line is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 or via Webchat and Email too.

These services provide practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear. We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and provide support for all the family.

Give me a shout if you need further help.

    Best regards.
