hi everyone, I just wanted to make a post on here as I've just signed up to this online community.

my mum was recently diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, and in the past few weeks was diagnosed with bone cancer - which is spreading quite quickly through her body. the drs said with treatment she's got 6 months to a year to live, which was a huge shock as she was told by the doctors that the pain in her back (where the cancer is) was muscular pain.

she had a liver transplant 2 years ago which she nearly didn't survive, and had a new lease of life after that - and now with this diagnosis, I can't help but feel that just as I've got her back, she's fading away again.

she's unable to walk on her own at the moment, and has lost quite a lot of her independence due to the pain she was experiencing in her back causing her to be less mobile.

im finding it very hard to talk about and come to terms with, I want to be positive for my mum but it's very hard when I feel as though I am already grieving her! I hope from joining this community, I'll be able to meet some people who can somewhat relate to what I've spoken about.

sending you all lots of hugs through these tough times, and im here if anyone wants to have a chat!

  • Hi Erin  and welcome to the Macmillan Online Community although I am so sorry to hear about your mum’s diagnosis and prognosis. A cancer diagnosis like this in the family can be such a stressful and challenging time but I do hope you will find the community a safe place to get support and ask your questions.

The Community has various support groups (discussion rooms) and when it comes to the practical and emotional challenges of supporting someone you may benefit from joining our general Family and friends and Supporting someone with incurable cancer groups where you will connect with others in the same position.

If you'd like to connect in with a group click on the Green (Bold) link I have created above. Then once the group page opens click on the black banner that says [click to join] at the bottom, or the [Join ]button under "Group tools."

You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘new post’ by clicking in the box near the top right with + New or + (Depending on the device you are using) and you are ready to go. You could copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

Macmillan have many support platforms so do check out the Macmillan Support Line is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 or via Webchat and Email too.

These services provide cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear. We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and provide support for all the family.

Give me a shout if you need further help.

    Best regards.
