Tamoxifen question

Hello all I’m new to the community and look forward to seeing what I can learn from you. I am currently on Tamoxifen and have been on it for six years, my oncologists has warned me that I should now come off it due to the fact of the risks which include DVT, womb thickening that could lead to cancer in that area.

I have always known patients to be placed on Tamoxifen for 10 years, so I was a little bit alarmed when I was  asked to come off it now, initially I was asked to come off it last year which would’ve been five years but I chose to stay on it for an extra year so I can think about it.

I was told that the position I am in now is that I have a small risk of breast cancer coming back due to me finding it early and the surgery and treatment I had.  I’m told I’m putting myself at risk remaining on Tamoxifen, I am confused and not sure what to do and very interested to hear if anyone else has experience this.

Many thanks and look forward to hearing from you all.

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I can understand why you feel confused about the advice you've been given when, as you say, you know people who have been on tamoxifen for 10 years.

As the online community is divided up into different support groups I'm going to recommend that you join the breast cancer group which is a great place to ask your question, share experiences and get support from others who are on or have been on tamoxifen.

To join just click on the link I've created and then join and post in the same way as you did here. You can also join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help
