Hi,

my mother was diagnosed with stage 3 pancreatic cancer about 6 weeks ago.

To say the family are shocked and devastated is an understatement. She went to dr because she was yellow and the next day she was admitted to hospital where she stayed for 4 weeks!

I have no idea how to support her, I’m being strong for her but she is so worried about the future, her finances etc.

i don’t even know where to begin to try and help her.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your mother has recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I know what a very difficult time this will be for the whole family.

As you know, the online community is divided up into different support groups and I can see that you've already found and joined the pancreatic cancer group which is a great place to ask questions and share experiences with others who have this type of cancer. When you feel ready to post there just click on the link I've created which will take you straight there. You can then start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

Can I also recommend that you join either the carers only group, if you are your mum's carer, or the family and friends group if you're not. They are safe and supportive places to discuss your worries and emotions and to find out how others have supported loved ones living with cancer.

You mention that your mother is worried about her finances so you might like to read this information together from Macmillan on managing money when you have cancer. She could also give the welfare rights team at Macmillan a call on 0808 808 0000 if she wanted to see if there are any benefits she's entitled to. They are available 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday.

When you have a minute it would be great if you could pop something about your mother's diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help
