Hi Wave. I have just joined the community. Hello to everyone. My husband has just been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. He is finding swallowing food quite difficult at times.  were trying to get some ideas on things to eat that are easy to pass through his oesophagus.  Rice. Bread. Mashed potatoes. All give him dreadful problems.

Hi there.  I'm Davis and I've recently received the same diagnosis so my thoughts are with you and your husband.  I find blending a few of my favourite foods help me with swallowing.  I have a really strong gagging problem with the pain so the smoother the better. If that doesn't appeal then it's a case of trial and error to see what he can more easily swallow.

  • Hi Davis…Sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis.  My husbands cancer is quite far down the oesophagus so he swallows ok but then things get stuck….we have found crackers are good as they crumble to dust almost when chewed….and fish and finely chopped veg are ok at the moment…I am scouring the supermarket shelves for ideas for him so he doesnt get fed up of the same things all the time….I havent tried blending things but perhaps I will..he could then have the taste without the claggy texture….

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read about your husband's recent diagnosis and that he's finding swallowing difficult at times.

As the online community is divided up into different support groups I'm going to recommend that you join the oesophageal cancer group, which is a great place to ask your question about what things would be easy for your husband to eat and to share experiences with others who have the same type of cancer as your husband, and also the carers only group which is a safe and supportive place to discuss your worries and emotions with others who have a loved one living with cancer.

Clicking on the links I've created will take you to the groups where you can join and post in the same way as you did here. You can also join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could pop something about your husband's diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help
