My mum has been diagnosed with cancer in her breast and lymph nodes. She had her second chemo on Maundy Thursday and a heart attack on Easter Monday after I visited in the garden. I so want to help but I am now worried she exerted herself too much when I visited. I live more than 100 miles away from her. Any advice would be appreciated.
Hi and welcome to the community though sorry to hear about your mother. Good to hear that she is going through chemotherapy but that can be quite hard and of course it is hard for you too being somewhat remote.
I did find what looks like a helpful page from the American cancer society about protecting your heart during chemotherapy that we can see here and I see on our site that some chemotherapy drugs do raise a risk of heart problems - this is of course one of the reasons that patients have regular blood tests when going through treatment.
I would strongly suspect your mum was really glad to see you and I am sure your visit did much to lift her spirit. It is also true she needs to look after herself while going through chemo and perhaps the most practical is keeping an eye out for any sign of fever - a digital thermometer like the ones used in hospital is such a useful tool at a time like this.
