Hi. My friend's 5-year was recently diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma and was started on chemotherapy straight away. They've always suspected that he may be on the autistic spectrum, but how he's reacting to treatment has really shown that it is a major problem (he's been observed by a child psychologist who agrees that he is on the spectrum). He becomes violent and aggressive when anything needs to be done (bloods, injections, chemo etc) and has started hitting himself and his parents, and he refuses to eat, drink or get dressed. Does anyone have any experience of a child on the spectrum acting this way during chemotherapy? Any advice, support, guidance or help for my friends of how to deal with this situation or who else to contact for help would be very much welcomed. Thank you for reading.

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

That sounds like a very difficult situation for your friend and I hope that they are able to access the help that they need.

As the community is divided up into different support groups I'm going to recommend that you join the parents of children with cancer group and also the family and friends group where you might connect with others who have experience with autistic children who have cancer.

If you'd like to join these groups just click on the links I've provided and then join and start a new post in the same way as you did here. You can also join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help
