Menfolk with breast cancer

I recently had a right mastectomy and axillary lymph node clearance and I am a 74yr old male.  Twelve days now since surgery, Pathology report expected 22nd Feb.  It sounds like I have just wandered into and A.A. meeting and it's my turn to speak.

The Consultant Surgeon informed that my case is 'very rare' and not just because I am a feller but there are other issues going on as well.  He has asked my permission for him to do a case study report.  Of course I said yes and signed on the dotted line so it looks like I might become a bit famous in an anonymous kind of way.

Radio and chemo to look forward to as I understand it.

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community although I am so sorry to hear about your your BC diagnosis, it is rare but in saying that we have a good few men come through the site with the same diagnosis. This is such a challenging and stressful time for you but I do hope you find the community a safe place to get support and ask your questions.

The New to Community is like our reception desk where we can signpost you to our various cancer specific support groups.

I do see you have joined our supportive Breast cancer group. You will obviously be in the minority but it is a safe place to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

If you'd like to connect in with a group click on the Green link I have created above. Then once the page opens you can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘new post’ by clicking in the box near the top right with + New or + (Depending on the device you are using). You will then see a dropdown menu so hit ‘Chat’ or ‘New here, say hello’ and you are ready to go.

You could copy and paste the text from this your first post. You can also search through existing ‘Discussions’ and click [reply] if you want to put up a comment.

The Macmillan Support Line is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 or via Webchat and Email too. This service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear. You may also find our Ask an Expert section helpful but do allow a few working days for a reply.

To find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers check our Online Information and Support Section

Talking to people face to face can help a lot but during these strange times it’s not that available but do check to see if any Local Macmillan Support in your area has opened up. Do also check out for a local Maggie's Centre in your area as these folks are amazing.

Always around if you need further help in navigating the community.

    All the very best.

  • Thanks Mike for your kind words and guidance re navigation.  When I was at school pocket calculators had not yet been invented so you can perhaps forgive me if I get a little lost when attempting to sail the huge waters of www.com.

It only took me three goes to post my 'Menfolk...' intro.

  • Hi again ....... I am 66 so we were just moving away from fountain pens and the ink well in the corner of the desk Joy

It's takes a moment to get a hang of navigating the community but keep going as you will connect many many people in the same position.

I think of the Online Community as lots of rooms (cancer type and support groups) all coming off a central corridor. The New to Community is like the reception desk....lets walk along the corridor.

So in joining the Breast cancer group you have found the room. The BOLD text is a link all links so just click on there and you will go straight to the group.

You can then have a look through all the discussions.

You can put word searches into the search tool Mag right near the top.... so try men's breast cancer.... and see if you get any hits on older posts. and as always you can hit reply to see if the members are still looking in.

You can consider introducing yourself by putting up a ‘new post’ by clicking in the box near the top right with + New or + (Depending on the device you are using). You will then see a dropdown menu so hit ‘Chat’ or ‘New here, say hello’ and you are ready to go.

If you want to find the groups you have already joined click on YOUR community name and it will take you to YOUR area on the site where you will see the groups you have joined and if you want to look back at posts you have already put up on the site click on the word 'Activity' and this will show you all your old posts.

Always around to help you get settled into the community.
