Hi, very scared at facing this with husband who was diagnosed last week. We saw consultant yesterday and already have appointment at cancer centre for tomorrow. Not sure whether to be scared at the speed or comforted! Husband told he can't have transplantation from anyone but a sibling, Sadly his siblings are 20 years older and it would be like asking them to give up their life for his. So it looks like we only have Chemo as an option. I'm numb, freezing cold and shaking - I have to find a way to stay strong.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the Online Community although I am so sorry to hear about your husbands AML diagnosis. This is such a challenging and stressful time for you all but I do hope you find the community a safe place to get support and ask your questions.

I am Mike Thehighlander and I help out around our blood cancer groups. I was diagnosed back in 1999 with a rare incurable Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma so have been on this journey rather a long time including having 2 Donor Stem Cell Transplants.

My brother was my donor, he was 10 years older than me, turning 70 and had health conditions but he easily went through the Stem Cell Harvest a few times and the process was no more different from giving blood..... just took longer.

The New to Community is like our reception desk where we can signpost you to our various cancer specific support groups and other services so can I recommend that in the first instant you consider joining our supportive Acute myeloid  leukaemia and Stem cell transplant groups. These will be safe places to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions, get support and talk with others who are supporting family and friends on their journey.

If you'd like to connect in with a group click on the Green link I have created above. Then once the page opens click on the black banner that says [click to join] at the bottom, or the [Join] button under "Group tools."

You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘new post’ by clicking in the box near the top right with + New or + (Depending on the device you are using). You will then see a dropdown menu so hit ‘Chat’ or ‘Start a Discussion in New here, say hello’ and you are ready to go.

You could copy and paste the text from this your first post. You can also search through existing ‘Discussions’ and click [reply] if you want to put up a comment.

I will keep an eye open for you in the groups but I am always around if you need further help in navigating the community or just to ask questions ((hugs))

    Mike (Thehighlander)
