Hi,

I'm new to this.

Today mum was diagnosed with a melanoma on her face they have taken a biopsy and now she needs to have more removed and her lymph nodes removed.

I keep thinking the worse they haven't told us a stage yet.

Has anyone been in the same situation?

Thank you

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the online community

I was diagnosed with melanoma 5 years ago now so I understand what a difficult time this will be for you and your mum.

I'm assuming that the further ops you mention are a wide local excision (WLE), which is when a further margin of skin is taken all around the original biopsy site, and a sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB), which is when the sentinel lymph node is removed to see if there are any traces of cancer cells present. I've had both of those ops and I'm happy to give you more details about them if you would like.

As the online community is divided up into different support groups I'm going to recommend that you join me over in the melanoma group which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support. You might also like to join the family and friends group which is a safe and supportive place to discuss your emotions with others who have a loved one dealing with cancer.

To join either or both of these groups just click on the links I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you feel ready, it would be great if you could pop something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help
