Hi there, I'm new here.

Due my mastectomy with DIEP flap reconstruction next Tuesday.

I've been vegan for 11 years now, and in the last three months raw vegan. I've got my bloods and my everything so beautifully balanced now, I'm getting worried about how my body will cope with the shock of the op, and all the meds etc. I'll be in hospital for five days, all being well, and I'm worried I won't get anything remotely like the food my body is now used to.

I know it's a hospital, not a restaurant, but I'm just concerned I'll get constipation, which may put pressure on my abdomen where the biggest cut will be. Confused

    1. Hi I had a my op a few weeks ago and thankfully I came home the following day.  I have been vegan for almost 25 years and I was worried about hospital meals.  Although I didn’t really eat much while I was there as I was asleep or felt nauseous I found that my hospital had 3 vegan options on their lunch menu and the same three options for tea, lentil bake, curry and I can’t remember what else.  Breakfast was dry toast and jam.  The ward did manage to get some plant based milk but only enough for one drink.  I was grateful for anything at the time but as  you will be in for a few days I would go prepared and take dried and fresh fruit and anything else you can snack on. I did need to have dates and prunes when I came home to relieve constipation especially as the painkillers bunged me up but I would not take the laxatives and gastric tablets the ward insisted on sending me home with.  Good luck on Tuesday and you will soon be back home enjoying your own food.  X
  • Hi Walkinglady! Thanks for your response, I hope you're healing very well. I think I'll call the hospital today and find out what they have to offer. Jeeze, I really don't want to be bunged up. Problem is that if I'm there for best part of a week, any fruit I take will not last,  especially since my room will be heated to 26°c!!!!! ...for healing purposes. God, I'm dreading it! I'll call and see what they say. Thank you xx

  • That's meant to read 26°c!!!

  • Hi HAC I didn’t mean to worry you-your hospital may be totally different.  Maybe they will let you take some things in a cool bag and store it in the fridge for you.  The staff are really helpful and will try their best to make you comfy and it’s in everyone’s best interests to get you eating and your digestion working as soon as possible.  XX

  • Hi do remember that The New to Community is like our reception desk where we can signpost people to our various cancer specific support groups and other services so you may not receive lots of support but you will if you re-post this in the Breast cancer group as this will be a safe place to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

  • Thanks, I'll try and do that. X

  • No, you haven't worried me, I'm pleased you said what you said as I've now managed to get through to the hospital and made them aware. I was also told their canteen do smoothies and they're lovely! I'm thinking positive...All Will Be Well! Xxx

  • I hope your operation went well today.  Take one day at a time with your recovery.  Hope the hospital vegan meals work out okay. XX
