Hello all,
I feel so silly coming here because the issue I'm struggling with is currently entirely hypothetical and very minor compared to everyone else here, but I'm just very anxious and didn't know what else to do. I know that most of you probably aren't medical professionals either so I'm not expecting a response, I just thought that it might help to share these thoughts with someone and maybe I might get pointed in the right direction. Sorry if I'm wasting all of your time.
My mum has a suspected basal cell carcinoma (awaiting testing) but I'm very anxious because she also has an autoimmune liver condition, which can also cause cancer. Does anybody know, can a BCC be a secondary cancer (e.g if my mum had liver cancer, could it have metastasised and show up as a BCC or something like that)? Also, my mum's mum passed away from malignant melanoma, so could this BCC turn into something more serious?
I know I'm probably worrying over nothing, I just can't stop obsessing over all of the possibilities and thinking about everything. I have a good knowledge about medical things which is partly why I can't calm down because I want more information but can't work out how to get it.
Thank you for listening, sorry for taking up space here. Sending lots of love and strength to all of you xx
Hi and welcome to the online community
I'm sorry to read that your mum has a suspected basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and I know what an anxious time this can be as I had one removed in the summer.
The normal way of finding out if it is a BCC is for it to be removed and sent off to be examined. Usually this is all the treatment that is needed unless it's discovered that clear margins weren't obtained in which case your mum might have to go back to have a further area of skin removed.
You could join us over in the skin cancer group if you wanted to be able to talk to others who have had a BCC removed. If this is something you'd like to do just click on the link I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
You are right that no one in the community is a medical professional so we don't have the knowledge to be able to answer your questions about possible secondaries, etc. The best person to answer these questions would be your mum's dermatologist.
You could also ring the Macmillan Support Line on 0808 808 0000 and pose your questions to one of the nurses. It's free to call and they're available every day from 8am to 8pm.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate you taking the time to reply to me. I will definitely check out the links you posted. Your reassurance is very kind, I hope you're okay xx
I'm very well and thanks for asking
My BCC wound has healed nicely and I'm just coming up to the end of my 5 year follow-ups having been diagnosed with melanoma back in 2016.
Take care
