Hi. My 26 son is severely autistic, has severe learning disability and challenging behaviour. He is non verbal and has limited means of communicating. After his care staff noticed one of his testicles was swollen this resulted in him needing an ultrasound. Due to his needs this had to be done under general anaesthetic and sedation to get him under. After the scan they immediately removed the testicle as the tumour was 7x6x3 cm and looked very abnormal. The blood markers confirmed cancer but we're waiting for more info on type and stage. We know he'll need a ct for this which again will mean sedation  general etc. All this is a very very frightening and distressing experience for him. He is oblivious to what is wrong.

My major concern now is that he will need chemotherapy which will be impossible as he won't tolerate anything invasive. Dental check ups  routine bloods etc all have to be done under general.

So I'm asking if anyone has any experience of treatments for people who can't tolerate needles.

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community but I am so sorry to hear about your son’s diagnosis and the challenges you are facing but I do hope you'll find lots of comfort and support here on the Online Community.

The New to Community is like the Community Reception area. There are many cancer experiences so the Community has many dedicated support groups but so see you have joined our Testicular cancer group. This is a safe place to talk to other people who might have a similar diagnosis or experience in supporting family.

If you'd like to connect into this group you can then introduce yourself by putting up a new post by clicking in the box near the top right with + New (Computers) or + (Mobile Devices). You will then see a dropdown menu so why not hit Start a Discussion in New here, say hello’

You could copy and paste the text from this your first post. You can also search through existing ‘Discussions’ and click [reply] if you want to put up a comment.

When it comes to the practical challenges of supporting someone especially with his specific needs you may benefit from joining our supportive Family and friends and Carers only groups where you will connect with others supporting family and friends

It’s always good to talk so do call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. This service provides lots of cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefit and financial guidance or just a listening ear.

To find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers check our Online Information and Support Section

Always around if you need further help in navigating the community.

    All the very best ((hugs))
