Hi I'm new to the group. My brother has just been diagnosed with cancer in his foot. I'm looking for support in how to support him and understand his emotions and also possibly ways to encourage him to access support too as at the moment he isn't ready to do so

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community but I am so sorry to hear about your brothers diagnosis but I do hope you'll find lots of comfort and support here on the Online Community.

The New to Community is like the Community Reception area. There are many cancer experiences so the Community has many dedicated support groups but I see you have joined and posted in our Melanoma group as this is a safe place to talk to other people who might have a similar diagnosis or experience.

When it comes to the practical challenges of supporting someone you may benefit from joining our supportive Family and friends group where you will connect with others supporting family and friends

Talking to people face to face can indeed help a lot but during these strange times it’s not that available but do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area has opened up. Do also check out for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing. During lockdown a lot of their services moved onto online video support. But I see our local Maggie’s (Inverness) are starting to open up for one on one support. Also check this link  to the Macmillan Buddies Telephone Service

It’s always good to talk so do call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. This service provides lots of cancer information, emotional support, benefit and financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Always around if you need further help in navigating the community.

    All the very best.
