Good morning all

My wife was recently diagnosed with a bowel tumour found during a colonoscopy, a follow-up CT scan found ‘spots’ on her lungs, liver and lymph nodes, I think what is classified as stage 4.

Her oncologist suggested chemo and she had her first session on Tuesday. First two days were fine but we ended up in A&E on Fri - she was very sick, brought up what little food she’d eaten that morning and even sips of water to try and get the anti-nausea pills were coming straight back up. To cut a long story short, two bags of anti-nausea, a bag of fluid and a bottle of paracetamol into her PICC line meant that we got back home on Friday night.

We knew that the chemo wouldn’t be easy, but it seems to have hit my wife hard; her words this morning were ‘I wish I hadn’t started the treatment’ - not easy to hear. I’m writing this for both of us, she’s a very private person but I hope that if she sees what people are saying in here and realised that she’s not the only person going through with this, perhaps I can get her to look in and maybe chat a bit.

Thank you for reading this - best wishes to everyone in the group.

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community but I am so sorry to hear that your wife has had a hard time with her first chemo, everyone reacts differently. I have had over 800hrs of chemo for my type of cancer and have had experienced all the reactions and side effects unfortunately.

Yes, both of you may find lots of comfort and support here on the Online Community.

The New to Community is like the Community Reception area. There are many cancer experiences so the Community has many dedicated support groups and I see you have already joined our Bowel (colon and rectum) cancer group. This is a safe place to talk to other people who might have a similar diagnosis or support experience.

If you'd like to connect into this group click on the Green link I have created above. Then introduce yourself by putting up a new post by clicking in the box near the top right with + New (Computers) or + (Mobile Devices). You will then see a dropdown menu so why not hit Start a Discussion in New here, say hello’

You could copy and paste the text from this your first post. You can also search through existing ‘Discussions’ and click [reply] if you want to put up a comment.

When it comes to the practical challenges of supporting someone you may benefit from joining our supportive Family and friends group where you will connect with others supporting family and friends

It’s always good to talk so do call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. This service provides lots of cancer information, emotional support, benefit and financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Always around if you need further help in navigating the community.

    All the very best.
