8 year old capillary malformation of lip-due to have a biopsy of lesion on the lip to rule cancer out

Hello,

I wasn't at all sure where to post so hope this is ok?

My son started with a lesion to his lower lip at about 6, started after he stopped a medication (so wondered if it was that) kept bleeding and very slowly increasing in size.

Fast forward he has seen a few Dr's in dermatology and they've took pictures he has it inside his left cheek red stain mark, lower lip, side of cheek, possibly in his left nostril (waiting on ENT to now be involved)

Dermatology want an mri-ultrasound-biopsies and are going to have a discussion with a vascular anomalies MDT to review his case as several consultants said it's all a bit abnormal.

They think some of it could possibly just be a port wine birth mark but they need to rule out a cancer on the lip.

My questions really are, is it possible for a child to get a cancer on their lip?

Is it normal that they want to put him to the top of the list priority wise but that's not till early next year when the theatre list is currently open again as they said it had been suspended due to the pandemic.?

Also if they thought there was a chance it was cancer is a few months wait the normal for a biopsy etc?

Any advice would much appreciated.

Thank You

  • Hi  and welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to read all that your son has gone through so far and that you still don't have an answer as to what this is.

The online community is divided up into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the head and neck cancer groupnot because I think your son has cancer, but because I think that might be the best group to ask questions, share experiences and get support from others who may have had something similar.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could pop a little something about your son's journey into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help.
