I hope someone is able to help me. My Mum was diagnosed with cancer in the rectum in September. Unfortunately the tumour perforated, she got sepsis and had to have an emergency operation to have a stoma fitted. Her prognosis is now terminal. She is currently in hospital receiving palliative care and is hoping to be discharged home early next week. My question is that everything she eats tastes horrible. She says that everything is too sweet but when we offer her savoury foods, she says they taste of sawdust. Does anyone have any ideas what foods we can tempt her with? Many thanks
Hi and a warm welcome to the online community
I'm very sorry to read that your mum has recently been diagnosed with cancer and I know what a tremendous shock this will have been for the whole family.
Although I haven't had any problem with a change in taste I do see a lot of people talking about this problem in the community. You might find having a look through this information from Macmillan on eating problems helpful.
The online community is divided up into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the supporting someone with incurable cancer group which is a supportive place to discuss your emotions and ask questions.
To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
It would be great if you could pop a little something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help.
