My mum moved down to live closer to us  4 weeks ago  & our GP has completed several initial new patient  tests  Last Wednesday  she rang with the results which weren't good,   Luckily I was out with her at the time and my amazing husband answered,   he took pages of notes

The GP has arranged a scan on Friday as she believes Mum has fairly advanced ovarian cancer.  Her prognosis  wasn't good possibly only a year / 18 months

Mum is  living with us until her retirement  flat is available.  She's loving being in daily contact with us  & my family including her young great grandson.  She's so happy , This changes everything

I cant bring myself to tell her ,yet  she has been feeling so much better after years of digestive issues.  She started a dairy free diet and  it seems to be making a big difference.

I've told her and my brother who lives abroad,   as much as I can but been careful not to state what the scan is for  - no one has asked directly . I've sort of drip fed them a bit at a time,  We had everything at once and it was horrendous , I've struggled  to be as normal as possible  since I knew . My older daughter is pregnant  and her sister is very close to her gran , so I've  said as little  to them too

I need to tell her more before Friday but how much . & how to even start ? She will  be devastated

My husband has been amazing but it's my job to manage this and I'm really struggling

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community but I am so sorry to read about your mum and the anticipated challenges you will be facing but I do hope you will find the support available in the community helpful at this difficult and challenging time.

Talking with others who are walking the exact same type of cancer support path will help you navigate this unwanted journey.

The New to Community is like the Community Reception area and as there are many cancer types and experiences so likewise the Community has many dedicated support groups to connect into so can I recommend you start by joining our Ovarian cancer group as this will be a good place for you to connect with other folks who may be on the same cancer support pathway.

Navigating the community will depend on the device you are using. To join a group just click on the green link above then scroll down and choose 'click to join' or 'join' on the page that opens.

You can then introduce yourself by putting up a post by clicking  on ‘New Thread’ or ‘New here, say hello’ then hit the box with the X on the top right (phones).

You could just copy and paste the text from this your first post and you can also join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.

When it comes to the practical challenges of supporting someone you may benefit from talking with others caring for family and friends so can I recommend that you join our supportive Carers only and Supporting someone with incurable cancer groups where you will connect with others supporting family and friends

It’s always good to talk so do call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available.
