My Dad has expressed as a bucket list thing, a want to return to my home in Spain to visit me his daughter for a week and enjoy a relaxing home break. We have insurance, we have booked the flights but on seeking guidance on help from his doctors / nurses, he has been told it is unwise to proceed.

I have asked if it is because of oxygen deficiency on flying and been told this isn’t the reason, it is due to him being between Chemo treatments and his immune system being low and risk of infection of any type.

has anyone done this, mitigated against the risk in any way or not done it, that would be willing to share their thoughts.

Dad wants to come, was willing to take the risk initially, but feels that after being told by the team it is unwise, he would be mad to do it, unless there are ways to safeguard within reason.

any thoughts appreciated, before we kick this bucket list dream to the turf.   His diagnosis is terminal with 3 months to 6 months tops and he is feeling okay between chemo cycles for 1 week and we had planned to go to spain for this week, next month.

many thanks for reading x

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community. I am so sorry to read about your dad’s diagnosis and prognosis but it’s great that the family are trying to support him with his bucket list.

I am rather surprised that you actually got comprehensive insurance for him to do the trip. I have an incurable blood cancer and it took me to be 2 years in remission following my last treatments before I was actually given any price by any insurers - well done.

I have flown over the past few years but as I am still Clinically Extremely Vulnerable I have been told airports and flights are a no go at the moment due to the eased Covid risks.

The fact that his team are saying it is unwise to proceed says a lot unfortunately.

You may find talking with others who may have faced these challenges so can I recommend that you join our supportive Family and friendsCarers only and Supporting someone with incurable cancer groups as this will open you up to more people supporting family and friends

    Hi Mike,

Thank you for your speedy and honest reply.

Although it's obviously not what I want to hear on the go ahead anyway front,  I do appreciate your informed input. In Spain we can obtain insurance with no pre conditions being taken into account,  so it is easier to obtain thankfully.

My sincere best wishes for your continued remission.

Thank you again for both your reply,  welcome and best wishes.

    Huggs x
