Hello, I'm new to the group.

Help, please. Sorry for the long post.... I was hit with the news yesterday that my dad has cancer. Even though he has family history of it I never expected the news I received yesterday especially at his age of 68.

I feel lost, helpless and don't know what to expect on how long he would have left to live as we have go to wait for appointments for find out more.

He has cancer in

*thyroid

*lungs

*lymph nodes in chest

*liver

*bowel

*bone (hip)

Can someone please, please give me any sort of heads up on what to expect to hear with regards to life expectancy. I know nothing is certain as you can't see his scans, but I also know it's not good as it has obviously metastasized so quickly... Just 2 months ago we were on holiday and he didn't have any symptoms.

Thank you

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community.

I am so sorry to read about your dad’s diagnosis, this is such a hard time for you to navigate but I do hope you will find the support available in the community helpful at this difficult and challenging time.

The members on the community are not medically trained and only have their individual cancer journey to look at. Each cancer pathway is oh so different so we just cant make any comment about prognosis - this information can only come from your dad’s clinical team.

It’s always good to talk so do call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. This service provides lots of cancer information, emotional support, benefit and financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Talking with others who are walking the exact same type of cancer support path (my one is completely different) will help you navigate this unwanted journey.

The community is divided up into different support groups so do look through this list and choose the appropriate groups for his various cancer presentations

Navigating the community will depend on the device you are using. To join a group just look through the list above then to join a group choose 'click to join' or 'join' on the page that opens.

You can then introduce yourself by putting up a post by clicking  on ‘New Thread’ or ‘New here, say hello’ then hit the box with the X on the top right (phones).

You could just copy and paste the text from this your first post and you can also join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.

When it comes to the practical challenges of supporting someone you may benefit from talking with others caring for family and friends so can I recommend that you join our supportive Family and friendsCarers only and Supporting someone with incurable cancer groups where you will connect with others supporting family and friends

To find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers check our Online Information and Support Section

If you need more help do get back to me.

    All the very best.
