So last night I received the news I hoped I’d never have to deal with. My mum has been diagnosed with breast cancer. I was given lots of information that I don’t understand. ER positive, HER positive, stage 3 or grade 3- I can’t remember which! She’s being brave but understandably devastated, as am I. She’s awaiting tests on her lymph nodes so still lots of unknowns. Apparently her treatment will include surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy but no dates as yet.
As she told me over the phone I tried to be strong for her and hold it together. I’ve said I’ll be there for anything she needs and to be positive. But inside I’m terrified and feel totally helpless.
I could really do with some advice on how to best support her through the next 12 months and beyond. She has my dad at home and my sister nearby, but I’m a little further away. We are a close family, but with this I just don’t know what to say or how best to be there for her. Please help x
Hi and welcome to the online community
I'm very sorry to read that your mum has just been diagnosed with breast cancer but you've come to the right place for information on this type of cancer along with ways to help.
The online community is divided up into different support groups and I can see that you've already joined the breast cancer group, which is a great place to ask questions and share experiences about treatment, and also the family and friends group which is a safe and supportive place to share your worries and emotions.
When you're ready to post there you can post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
It would be great if you could pop something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help.
