Hi I’m now on my 3rd diagnosis of breast cancer and about to have a mastectomy on my right breast and chemotherapy.

9 years ago I had a mastectomy with reconstruction on my left side due to DCIS, it took me a year to recover due to wrong implant and PTSD. On my 5th year of mammogram surveillance cancer was detected in my right breast, this time it was oestrogen receptive, had lumpectomy, radiotherapy and letrozole- for 10years. Really struggle on medication and have had to alter my lifestyle accordingly.

3 years later a Routine mammogram picked up cancer in scar tissue, so far had biopsy, CT scan and awaiting axilla scan. I now need a mastectomy on my right side and follow up chemo due to HER2. So at the moment in the waiting game to know when surgery will commence. Positive news though is that CT scan was clear- my biggest fear.

What’s different third time round, I’m not worrying about work or how long it will take to recover, I have done mindfulness, and self compassion training since my first diagnosis and definitely think it’s having an effect on my outlook. That’s not to say I don’t cry or feel overwhelmed, but I can sit with those emotions until they pass.
