Eyelid biopsy

Hello everyone, I am a new member.

I have recently developed a small lump on my lower eyelid and I've been seen by several specialists, they all have different opinion.

I've been advised to have a biopsy to exclude basal cell carcinoma (BCC). In case it's cancer, I will need to have Mohs surgery followed by reconstruction.

Apart from worrying about cancer, I am also worried about my appearance as the eyelids are a sensitive area.

I am also not sure whether to do this via NHS or to go privately.

Does anyone have experience with this or any recommendation? Thanks!

Hi Anna. I have just had an excisional biopsy on a large lower lid lesion 4 weeks ago. It had grown to around 3mm so quite large for the eye and right in the corner. I had mine done through the nhs but at a private hospital that allows for nhs patients. Currently waiting on biopsy results as I’ve had the lesion slow growing for four years. It’s now 4 weeks and no biopsy back yet but I contacted them this morning for an update so hopefully i will hear soon.

My excision was done under local anaesthetic and done within about 15 mins. Uncomfortable but not painful and I recovered after probably 4/5 days. No stitches used, they cauterised the area to stop the bleed.

It is so difficult to find information on the eye so I hope this has helped as I struggled to find anyone who had gone through my experience. I will update you with my outcome when I hear it.

    good luck

    Hi Rachel,

Thank you so much for your message, it helps a lot!

I hope your results will be ok and you can forget about all this. It's so stressful, fingers crossed for a good outcome!

Can you tell me more about the healing process? I've been told eyelids heal very quickly and they heal well. Apart from cancer, I am also concerned about the visual aspect of the whole procedure. My lump is 2mm big, they said I would have an incisional biopsy.

    Many thanks!
