In February 2021, just a few weeks after the second covid jab, my mum (65yrs old) started to get leg pain. She put up with it for a couple of week, but this was starting to get painful, and no paracetamol, tiger balm, hot water bottle or packets of frozen peas were easing the pain.
she has a telephone appointment with the doctor and he gave her some painkillers, which didn’t work!! After about 4 moths of being given different painkillers the doc wanted an MRI, so this was booked and then cancelled and re booked for 25th July. Which found a mass on the bottom of the spine. Mum was told to go to a different hospital to see the neurologist who would be waiting for her. When she arrived, she had to have some bloods taken and have a ct scan. She had morphine for the pain, which killed the pain. The ct scan found a mass on her lungs , she was told this with no other family members there. So she had to deal with the thought of cancer in her back and now lung cancer!

a small amount of the lung cancer had broken off and travelled through her blood stream to her back. She had to have three biopsy’s and had a big blast off radiotherapy, once all that was done Mum was allowed home. She was pain free.

until two weeks after radiotherapy the pain arrived and was totally off the scale. Seeing you mum in so much pain is heartbreaking Broken heart
we’ve had Macmillan nurses, district nurses and doctors all come to see mum while she was at home   Mum now has a syringe driver in place and back in hospital. Sunday 22nd August. Mum couldn’t get out of bed. We phoned the district nurses and they phoned for Dr to come out. He said he wanted her to go to the local cancer ward but the consultant said no, straight to a different A&E to be assessed. An ambulance was called and off she went, we followed in the car, to be told we wasn’t allowed to stay with her. She was high on morphine and really didn’t know what was going on. But we still couldn’t stay.
At 5.30am mum messaged me with a very mixed up message so off I went to A&E, mum was in a state, in so much pain, again heartbreaking Broken heart Mum was in A&E on a trolley for over 17hrs, before she was on a ward.

The assessment ward was lovely, and we were able to stay with her too x

The biopsy’s still haven’t returned from Birmingham, I ring up every morning at 10am.
we have an appointment on Tuesday, to talk to the consultant. I know the news is not going to be good.

My world is slowly falling down around me.

so that is my story x

  • Hi and welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your mum and her ongoing diagnosis.

A cancer diagnosis in the family can be very challenging but talking with others who are walking the same type of cancer treatment support journey (my one is completely different) will help you navigate this difficult time.

The New to Community is like the Community Reception area and as there are many cancer types and experiences so likewise the Community has many support groups so can I recommend you start of by joining our supportive Lung Cancer and Lung, secondary cancer groups as these will be good places to connect with folks who may be on the same cancer treatment support pathway.

Navigating the community will depend on the device you are using. To join a group just click on the green link above then scroll down and choose 'click to join' or 'join' on the page that opens.

You can then introduce yourself by putting up a post by clicking  on ‘New Thread’ or ‘New here, say hello’ then hit the box with the X on the top right (phones).

You could just copy and paste the text from this your first post. You can also join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.

When it comes to the practical challenges of supporting someone you may benefit from talking with others caring for family and friends so do check out our Carers only group where you will connect with others supporting family and friends

It’s always good to talk so do call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. This service provides lots of cancer information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear.

We also have Cancer Nurse Team in our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

To find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers check our Online Information and Support Section

    All the very best ((hugs))

    Hi Walt,

I'm so sorry to hear about your mother. I'm in the US and have a simple document called a"power of attorney for health care" which allows me to get information, ask questions, see test results and make decisions for my son who has leukemia.  Is there such a document in the UK?  That may help you feel informed and closerto your mom when she is in hospital.
