Having a hard time dealing with all the emotions since my Mum was discharged today with end stage bowel cancer after a 4 year battle. She has been fast tracked and everyone is really helpful but I just wonder how others cope with symptoms overnight like sickness.I was told she is being given anti sickness meds via a syringe driver but she has still had a few bouts of sickness.Feel I cant relax for a second but trying not to show this as it is her wish to be at home.Would you just let nurses know in the morning. Not quite sure what is 'normal' and when to call for help really.Until 2 weeks ago she was really active, the speed of decline is hard to cope with.Dont feel I can sleep 'just in case'.Wondered how others cope in this situation.TIA

  • Hi and welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your mum’s diagnosis.

A cancer diagnosis in the family like this can be very challenging but talking with others who are walking the same type of cancer support journey (my one is completely different) will help you navigate this difficult time.

The New to Community is like the Community Reception area and as there are many cancer types and experiences so likewise the Community has many support groups.

When it comes to the practical challenges of supporting someone you may benefit from talking with others caring for family and friends, I see you have joined and posted in our Carers only group and you may also find our Supporting someone with incurable cancer group helpful as well as you will connect with others supporting family and friends

It’s always good to talk so do call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. This service provides lots of cancer information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear.

We also have Cancer Nurse Team in our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

    All the very best ((hugs))
