Terrified newbie!

My 57 year old ex-husband (we're still close friends) was taken to hospital on Monday because he'd collapsed and was paralysed. An emergency MRI found tumours on his upper spine. He's still in hospital for the foreseeable future and needs a neck brace to support his spine. He's on continuous morphine and steroids, as well as Oramorph. His right arm is not working and he's struggling with pain levels.

COVID rules say only his girlfriend is allowed to see him and that's only an hour a day. This means his son and I can't be with him, so we're face timing and texting every day. The doctors diagnosed cancer, but he needs a biopsy and hasn't started radiotherapy yet, as they don't have a bed. I'm scared that the doctors will tell him it's a secondary cancer as he had two skin cancer lesions removed five years ago.

I'm trying to be positive but I'm struggling right now and want him to be well again. Does he have a chance of a good outcome or are we facing a short future with him?

  • HI and welcome to the Online Community. I'm so sorry to read about your ex-husband's collapse and the fact that  subsequent MRI has found spinal tumours. The fact you and your son can't visit due to Covid rules must make it even harder for you to process this situation despite face timing and texting.

I have a different type of cancer but I do know any possibility of a cancer diagnosis brings anxiety, stress and fears so I'm going to suggest that you join our Spinal Cord cancer group where you'll be able to connect with others supporting loved ones on the same journey. Just click on the link I've created to join, then introduce yourself and re-post this thread. Read some of the posts and just click on reply to answer that take your interest.

Sending you welcoming hugs, B xx

  • Thank you so much. My helplessness feels less overpowering, now I know I'm not alone

  • ScoobyOoby, really sorry to hear of your ex-husbands condition.  I'm a month ahead of him!  Very similar symptoms and cracked vertebra. Similar age.

The steroids really help initially to stop things getting worse. My biopsy has come back (nasty) and I've had 5 doses of radiotherapy.  We're waiting to see what's next, more of the same I hope. It can take 3 weeks to see if the tumour has been affected.

The neck collar/brace for the last month has been horrid. And mobility.

Blood tests and full body MRI were the most important things for me. The spine tumour isn't always secondary. I got the all clear on all other organs etc very quickly. Then it's time to fight just one thing.

I wish you all well and good luck.

  • He was transferred to a dedicated cancer unit yesterday and they've discovered that he has primary kidney cancer, with secondary tumours on his spine and ribs. I am stunned that his spinal tumours have also grown so fast in just 7 days since first diagnosis
