Hi all,
I'm new here and I'm looking for help.
Both parents have cancer, dad is 80 with lung cancer, he has been given radiotherapy, his cancer has not gone nor will it, he will need to live with it, it hasn't grown since treatment 18 months ago. He has recently been diagnosed with dimentia too and COPD.
mum is 67 and diagnosed with lung cancer, she's having radiotherapy and chemo, she's been really poorly, the treatment has hit her hard, confused, memory loss, dioreah, constipation, constantly vomiting and she's struggling to keep her salt levels up.
I live abroad and I'm splitting my time between UK and Cyprus, work have been great but I'm taking lots of time off. Dad is hard work and is way too much for mum when I'm not here, she can't concentrate on getting better herself as she's stressed out with dad, we've tried respite, he lasted 4 days, he was so difficult for the staff and consequently on the phone demanding to be taken home, I ended up getting a flight back to UK to get him home.
My question is, is it a good idea to take him to Cyprus with me for a few weeks to give mum a break? I've looked into health insurance but can't find a company who will insure him, are the companies that specialise in this type of insurance at all?
Hi and welcome to the online community
I'm very sorry to read that both your mum and dad have lung cancer and that your dad also had dementia and COPD.
I don't know if it's a good idea to take him to Cyprus with you but it can be more difficult to find reasonably priced travel insurance when you have had a cancer diagnosis. However, there are many people who have and their recommendations can be found in the travel insurance group. Can I recommend that you come and join us over there and, if this is something that you'd like to do, clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there.
To join the group just click on the link I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
Once you've joined can I recommend that you take a look at the recommendations in the 'recommended travel insurance' thread as that's where the majority of recommendations from other forum members are.
It is best to phone the insurance companies rather than try and do online quotes as often at the end of the online quote it will tell you to phone the company and you'll then have to go through all the information again. Also sometimes the broker can refer to the underwriters to see if they would provide cover when an online quote might just give you a straight refusal.
Make sure that you have all the information to hand about your dad's diagnosis and treatment before contacting the insurers. This is a list of things an insurance provider might want to know when you're applying for insurance. Some providers might ask for a letter from your dad's doctor saying that he is well enough to travel. This could come from his cancer team or GP.
