Good morning, I have just joined the Community Group today as my partner has been diagnosed with throat and lymph node cancer and about to start treatment. It was all very sudden and I am just trying to get to grips with what lies ahead. I'm not sure what I should be asking or saying at this point, just need to get my thoughts straight.
Hi MadsD and welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your partners diagnosis.
A cancer diagnosis in the family can be very challenging but talking with others who are walking the same type of cancer journey (my one is completely different) will help you navigate this difficult time.
The New to Community is like the Community Reception area and as there are many cancer types and experiences so likewise the Community has many cancer specific support groups so can I recommend you join our supportive Head and neck cancer and Lymph nodes, secondary cancer groups as these will be a good places to connect with folks on the same cancer treatment pathway.
To join a group just click on the link above then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens.
You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘New Thread’ or hit the box with the X on the top right (phones), you could just copy and paste the text from this your first post. You can also join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.
When it comes to the practical challenges of supporting someone you may benefit from talking with others caring for family and friends so do check out our Family and friends group where you will connect with others supporting family and friends
It’s always good to talk so do call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. This service provides lots of cancer information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear.
We also have Cancer Nurse Team in our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.
To find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers check our Online Information and Support Section.
All the very best.
Thank you so much, that is all really useful information and I will be joining those groups you flagged up. It's all so alien at first isn't it?
Yes a cancer diagnosis can be so alien but clear information and help from people who have walked the walk can help a lot - the is the advantage of the community.
I have been on my rare Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma journey for over 22 years now (hit my name for my story) so I have developed the ability to define how I ‘live’ with my incurable cancer rather than let ‘it’ define me ((hugs))
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
