I have a teenage daughter who has broken down today and said she can't cope anymore with 'everything' but the main thing is the fact that her grandad has cancer and it's recently been said that there's nothing more that can be done.
He's getting VERY rapidly worse, he's in hospital at the moment and it's quite possible he won't come out!
I've tried to talk with her tonight but she said she can't talk to me because she doesn't know how to say what's going on in her head because she can't explain it herself!
She said there are other factors too like school tests etc. but my belief is that the other things are offshoots of the main issue of her grandad.
Has anyone got any ideas / tips on how to help her?
Hi and welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about the challenges you are facing around with your teenage daughters reactions to her grandad's prognosis.
A cancer diagnosis in the family like this can be very challenging and more so for the younger members of the family. You might like to have a look at this information from Macmillan on understanding childrens' reactions and also this on talking to children when an adult has cancer. You can also download, or order a paper copy, of this booklet.
Talking with others who are walking the same type of cancer support journey will help you navigate this difficult time so do check out our Carers only and Supporting someone with incurable cancer groups where you will connect with others supporting family and friends
To join a group just click on the link above then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens.
You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘New Thread’ or hit the box with the X on the top right (phones), you could just copy and paste the text from this your first post. You can also join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.
