Life after hemicolectomy

I had a right hemicolectomy in January this year. It all went well and I feel back to my old self.  The only issue I have is the change to bowel movements in that I have at least 2 in the morning and a third in the afternoon quite often.  Yesterday I actually had 4.  When I spoke to my consultant at my 3 month check, I asked him about this.  He said if it was becoming inconvenient I could have medication to control it. It is becoming difficult as I take my dogs for a good hour walk most mornings and it's almost as if the exercise stimulates my bowel and the need to "go" gets more urgent on the way back to the car. Has anyone gone down the medication route and if so is it working?   I thought maybe I should eat smaller portions but that doesn't make much difference.

Thanks

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your diagnosis and ongoing challenges.

A cancer diagnosis can be very challenging but talking with others who are walking the same type of cancer journey (my one is completely different) will help you navigate this difficult time.

The Community has many cancer specific support groups and I see you have joined our supportive Bowel (colon and rectum) cancer group as this will be a good place to connect with patients and family on the same cancer treatment pathway.

To go to the group just click on the link above then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘New Thread’ or hit the box with the X on the top right (phones), you could just copy and paste the text from this your first post. You can also join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.

It’s always good to talk so do call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. This service provides lots of cancer information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear.

We also have Cancer Nurse Team in our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

    All the very best.

    Hi Hemi

I had the same in October 2017, then six months of Chemotherapy.
I found trial an error worked after a while. I also do a 5:2 diet which helps with my weight but also my ‘ movements ‘

My advice would be to trial and error eating habits/diet regimes before medication. Your new plumbing will take time to settle. Good luck going forward

    cheers
