Hi,  My husband has recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer aged 42. We have two children aged 6 and 9 and were all really struggling to come to terms with it. I'd be interested to talk to other people who are in or have been through a similar situation about how to manage and help my children cope. Can you point me in the right direction?

Many thanks

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the online community

I'm really sorry to read that your husband has been diagnosed with incurable cancer and I know what a difficult time this will be for the whole family.

Can I suggest that you join the supporting someone with incurable cancer group where you can discuss your emotions about the prospect of losing your husband as well as practical issues about palliative care and end of life.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

You might find this information from Macmillan on talking to children about cancer helpful. They also produce this booklet on talking to children when an adult has cancer which you can download or order through the post.

It would be great if you could pop something about your husband's diagnosis and treatment so far in your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help.
